Bio:

Mike Shipman is a self-taught photographer with a bachelor's degree in wildlife biology and a near master's degree in raptor biology. He's been photographing most of his life and left the wildlife field in 2005 to pursue a full-time career as a professional photographer. He's been exhibiting his fine art prints and teaching photography in the Boise area since 1998, has been published in several magazines in the northwest, and has international editorial and commercial clients.

We seem to be caught up in the explosion of technology as it relates to digital photography; Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom, plug-ins, filters, APS vs full frame sensor, video, laptop, desktop, monitors, HDR, wireless remote triggers, color spectrometers, printers, paper, ink, the list goes on. Do we really need all that clutter? Somewhere amongst all the jumble and mental overload are the reasons we photograph. Have you become derailed by technology and are now running down a different set of tracks away from your original objective of creating great art? Mike Shipman, professional freelance photographer and owner of Blue Planet Photography in Nampa, will present an argument that "old school" thinking still applies in the digital age and pose a challenge to photographers to remember where you came from as well as where you're going.

It all started with a Minolta SRT 101 coupled with a passion for the outdoors. That was over 25 years ago. Since then, I’ve gone through many different film and digital cameras, thousands of images and hundreds of locations in the U.S and abroad. For me, photography is a way to share my love of the outdoors and travel with others.







This image is of a Bleeding Heart that I shot in my front yard after spending a day up in the mountains taking photos. Turned out to be my favorite photo of the day and also the one that opened the door to being selected for several assignments to shoot for a local magazine.
